Fishing near St Andrews and Dundee

March 10, 2018 //  by Stewart Collingswood

The Best Salmon and trout fishing near St Andrews

Here is a list of the best fishing near Dundee, Perth and St Andrews. There are some of our best rivers and lochs for salmon and trout fishing in Scotland. The River Tay is less than an hour away and is one of Scotland’s big 4 rivers. The Tay River runs for 117 miles and its source is on the West coast of Scotland. The fishing season runs from 15th January to 15th October, and salmon can be caught all year.

The Lower River Tay – 50 minutes from St Andrews

A typical fly fishing day for salmon on the River Tay runs like this. Alba Game Fishing collect you from your hotel. Perth is 10 minutes from the river, Dundee 35 minutes away and St Andrews 50 minutes from the beat we use. We work closely with Pittormie Castle, Fairmont St Andrews and The Old Course and regularly pick guests up for trout and salmon days.

What is a river ghillie?

On arrival at the riverside, you will be given a warm welcome, and offered tea or coffee. This is a chance to chat with the resident ghillie. For the record, a ghillie is responsible for the day to day running of the beat, your safety and for ensuring you have a memorable day. In fact, a good ghillie can really enhance a day salmon fishing on the River Tay

The ghillie would also be responsible for the other anglers fishing on the beat that day. Therefore that’s where the fishing guide comes in. Working as a team, your Alba Game Fishing guide will be on your shoulder all day assisting you, pointing out salmon lies, giving casing tips and ensuring your safety.

Guests who want to try different fly rod and line combinations can enjoy a selection of Sage R8 Spey rods. Likewise if trout fishing we have a range of Sage trout rods in stock.

Trout Fishing Lochs near St Andrews (Lakes)

There are a number of great stillwaters near St Andrews and in the Perth and Dundee area. Lochs are more productive than rivers in this area for catching wild brown trout and rainbow trout. The trout lochs are all fly fishing method only. There is a loch near Dundee which makes the perfect trout fishery for a half-day excursion from St Andrews. Its located in the hills and we took the Formula One racing driver David Coulthard there once for a day and he really enjoyed the experience.

Best Fishing Rivers and Lochs near Perth

Firstly some of the best lochs and rivers in Scotland can be found near Perth. In fact the market town of Perth is a good place to base yourself to target the Tay and numerous lochs in the area.

Secondly, Perth is located in the centre of Scotland, and therefore handy to access most rivers. The River Tay runs from the west coast of Scotland, eastwards to Perth and on towards the tidal water at Dundee.

This historic and productive river offers many great river options. The main tributaries of the Tay, The Isla and Ericht, are outstanding salmon rivers in their own right. The Isla being generally slower flowing and the Ericht a tributary that joins the Isla, resembles more of a spate river.

In addition, the Tay splits into two big rivers north of Dunkeld, the Tummel and the Tay. As a result, the Tummel is a worthy alternative. As the Tay narrows towards Aberfeldy it splits again into the River Lyon.

Glen Lyon is thought to be one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland, and if you hit the river when the levels are right, the sport can be epic. You can also catch wild brown trout in the River Lyon.

Best lochs and rivers in Scotland for fishing near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands

To begin, the river Ness has becomes of of the best salmon rivers in Scotland. Additionally, the river runs through the centre of Inverness. Because it is fed from Loch Ness, river levels are always good. As a result,, when other rivers are low, the Ness still offers unparalleled sport.

Secondly, the River Ness is a short river. It flows 6 miles from Dochfour weir at Loch Ness to the Moray Firth estuary. There are some monsters to be caught, but not Nessie. Salmon can be caught in the Spring, and April and May are productive months.

Finally it’s worth remembering, with over 30,000 lochs in Scotland, most of them have a population of brown trout. Loch Eye is a fertile shallow loch in the Highlands. As a result it only averages a depth of 8ft. However this loch offers some of the finest wild brown trout in Scotland. Lastly, the sport here is mainly on the surface, with dry flies and palmered fly patterns on the “pull”

Best lochs and rivers in Scotland in the Highlands of Scotland

Firstly some of the best lochs and rivers in Scotland are North of Inverness. In addition there is a huge choice of salmon fishing rivers. The River Alness, this is a small spate river, draining into the Cromarty Firth. If the conditions are right and there is good water, the fishing throughout this scenic river can be fast and furious.

The River Shin is one of the finest salmon rivers in Scotland and similar in size to the Alness. An ideal salmon rod for this would be a 10-12ft switch rod, as this will help you target the small pockets of water that hold fish. Casting can be tricky and you need to be accurate and be careful not to spook fish.

There are other notable rivers north of Inverness in the Highlands, the River Conon is one of my favourites. The Conon is fed by a Hydro system with regular outflows of water. Subsequently, this regulates flow and .

Also Cassley and Upper Cassley river is one of the most remote and beautiful river systems in Scotland, a small highland spate river. Its source almost kissing the West Coast of Scotland. If you’re looking for fishing in Isolation and amidst stunning scenery, the Cassley ticks your boxes.

Are there mosquitos or no–see-ums in Scotland?

Firstly the good news is that we do not have these flies in Scotland. This makes fishing very pleasant and stress free. On the West Coast of Scotland and in the highlands, there is a small biting fly called a “midgie”. The midge is probably similar to a no see um. Avoiding them is easy. Also, they do not like sunshine and if there’s any sort of breeze you won’t be affected by them.

They tend to be more of a problem on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. On a still, damp overcast day they thrive and feed. The bite is not too bad, a wee nip and most people are not irritated by the bites, anti histamines can help.

Lastly, in 18 years of running guided fishing trips throughout Scotland, with thousands of clients, we’ve only had a few days where midges were a problem. So in summary, the biggest fly problem you will encounter, is which one to tie on your line!

Despite my son being only 8 years old, we’ve managed some memorable a fishing trips together. As a result, it’s been my most cherished times with him, enjoying nature, and away from distractions.

Because, fishing is a pursuit that draws on our survival skills and hunter-gatherer instincts. Sharing such a primal bonding experience with your son becomes a deep-rooted, almost primal, and rewarding experience.

Surely a Father and Son fishing trip can only be bettered by a father and two sons? This lovely family enjoyed catching a dozen big trout. It was an escape for them, away from the bustle of London to enjoy a fly fishing trip for trout near Glasgow. The venue is a private trout fishery located 30 minutes west of Glasgow and close to Loch Lomond. Ideal for private fishing parties as it sits within a private estate.

Father and Son fishing for Pike – Bass fishing pros

Doug Topken from New York, enjoyed a pike fishing trip with Alba last year and brought his son Trevor. Trevor was no ordinary angler. He was a pro competition Bass fisherman. A lad who had the ability to adapt to our tackle instantly and cast with unnerving accuracy.  In fact, Doug was a great angler too. Trevor was a chip off the old block. Similarly, the skills required to catch Bass are not dissimilar to techniques for lure fishing for pike.  Trevor’s accurate casting was very impressive indeed. Working with kids to get them on a better path

It’s often the case that kids take instruction from guides, better than from their own Dads. I know this.

Our guide John pictured below is disclosure checked and a professional casting instructor. He is a calm patient guide and is excellent at instructing children on the art of fishing, whatever the species of fish.

He introduced children to fishing from underprivileged backgrounds.  The aim to steer them from a life of crime and bad choices. This was a government initiative that was a huge success, however, sadly ran out of funding.

John said “many of the kids changed completely once they connected with nature and focussed on fishing”

Encouraging the kids to disconnect from screens

Firstly, in todays busy technological times, it’s great to encourage kids to spend time disconnected from devices. Our days are engaging and enjoyable, and we teach kids to relax and enjoy the outdoors. To appreciate nature and learn the benefits of switching off the devices.

Kids enjoy exploring, learning and discovering. One kid that spent a day with us, spent hours getting my labrador to retrieve a stick from the River Tay. His father offered to buy my dog, but that’s another story.

Sharing nature together. Believe me, it’s not only spiritual and uplifting but creates lifelong memories.

Finally, if you would like to share time in the outdoors fishing with your son(s) or daughter(s) Please get in touch to create a fishing holiday or trip in Scotland.

Fishing in Scotland in September

February 14, 2018 //  by Stewart Collingswood

September is the best month for fly fishing in Scotland

September is one of the best months in Scotland to go fishing, and here are the reasons why:

  • The wild brown trout fishing is best, fish are feeding heavily, prior to the run-up to spawning
  • Salmon are prolific in the rivers Tweed and Tay, the autumn run of Atlantic Salmon starts
  • Sea fishing is productive and large predators can be caught
  • Grayling fishing in the rivers is starting to reach a peak
  • The scenery is wonderful with the start of autumn and changing colours
  • The climate in Scotland is beautiful in September
  • There are fewer tourists (and anglers) to get in your way
  • The perfect month to try and complete the Macnab sporting challenge

The end of the Edinburgh Festival. Sanity returns to the streets

It’s true there are fewer tourists here in September. Edinburgh is less busy, after the end of the Edinburgh Festival. The thespians of London depart, and you can walk around without tripping over a juggler or getting run over by a court jester on a unicycle. Sanity hits the streets again. Prices in hotels resume normal levels, and you can book the best tables in restaurants.

Sea Fishing Trips and salmon fishing on the River Tweed

September is also a month when you can catch some very large pike. We have access to one of the best lochs in Scotland, accessible from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Fly fishing for pike has increased in popularity, if you haven’t already tried it, then this is the perfect fishery to introduce you to this exciting technique.

Pike are the ultimate predator and the water temperature is perfect in September for surface action spinning with surface plugs such as the Argobast Jitter Bug. Jigheads and soft plastic lures work well too and we are obsessed with the latest fishing techniques and tackle. Not ashamed to say, most of our guides are tackle geeks.

Historically, we have always caught some of our bigger (monster) pike in September and October, and you can also enjoy a cooked lunch in the lochside lodge, with some breathtaking views.

In conclusion, a day in the outdoors, learning new skills can be deeply rewarding, and a wonderful way to disconnect from our busy lives. The best fishing spots in Scotland

January 5, 2018 //  by Stewart Collingswood

Where to find the best fishing in Scotland

Firstly, the best fishing spots in Scotland are ever changing and evolving. Due to weather patterns changing, different rivers and lochs perform better or worse accordingly.

In addition, Scotland is blessed with over 30,000 freshwater lochs and hundreds of productive game fishing rivers. The biggest (and best) fishing rivers in Scotland are (by length):

  1. River Tay 193km (120miles)
  2. River Spey 172km (107miles)
  3. Clyde River 171km (106miles)
  4. River Tweed 156km (97miles)
  5. River Dee 137km (85miles)
  6. Aberdeenshire Don 132km (82miles)
  7. River Nith 112km (71miles)
  8. River Forth 105km (65miles)
  9. The Findhorn 101km (63miles)
  10. River Deveron 98km (61miles)
  11. River Annan 79km (49miles)

In Scotland, the rivers generally flow west into the Atlantic or east into the North Sea. The River Tay is the river currently holding the UK record for Atlantic salmon. Miss Georgina Ballatine’s monster salmon tipped the scales at 64lb. The record has stood since this fantastic capture in 1922.

With all this choice and variety of rivers and fishing in Scotland, how do you find the best fishing spots in Scotland?

The importance of working with a fishing guide

Employing a fishing guide with local knowledge is the quickest way to identify the hot spots. Fishing guides want guests to catch fish. Their livelihood depends on it!

The fishing guides in the Alba team are based all over Scotland and have spent a lifetime of fishing searching out the secret fishing holes and the most productive rivers and lochs.

Finding the best fishing in Scotland is one thing, however how to fish these waters is another. I know a loch in Shetland which holds monster wild brown trout and I have had guests catch some huge specimens over the years. This is a loch you would not fish until twilight and darkness. The trout are easily spooked in the gin clear water, and feed confidently at night.

Then, of course, you need to know what flies to fish. This requires knowledge of the natural food source and also triggers that work according to conditions. Matching the hatch is important, as is knowing how to present the fly.

Choose the right fishing spots for the right time of year

All rivers in Scotland, peak at different times. The intelligence built up on the rivers is based on a combination of data, i.e. historic catch returns, local knowledge, and seasonal changes. In addition, if the wind is strong, our guides will know what beats to fish, to get shelter.

The weather in Scotland when fishing

Weather in Scotland plays a key factor and when guests make an enquiry, we try to find the best fishing for the time of year that they request. As a quick example, mid to late April can be the best time for trout fishing on the River Annan. Whereas, early April can be world class on the Tweed.

Cold January days can be the best for grayling fishing on the River Tweed. Late May and June are the best fishing on the Highland lochs and the West coast salmon rivers start to produce the best fishing in Scotland for Atlantic salmon.

Brown trout in lochs throughout Scotland get quite sparky and aggressive in Sept, pre-spawning and big specimens can be captured. Each river system and loch has its time. There are too many variables to mention.

Using good fishing tackle is also a way to improve your chances of success.

Alba Game Fishing has invested a great deal of money into ensuring the clients have the best possible chance. We use the most up to date fishing tackle and waders.

We also carry a stock of 45 pairs of breathable chest waders and boots with tungsten studs. This ensures safe wading practice and offers a good foothold on the river bed.

You can also enjoy trout fishing with a wide range of Sage and Orvis Fly Rods on river days with us.

Best Fishing Spots in the Highlands

When based in or around Inverness, or in the North of Scotland, here are some tips.

The Highland hill lochs are not worth targeting until May onwards. The temperature up in these hills is always a few degrees colder and the trout feed heavier when the fly life picks up.

If you are based near Fort William, Glencoe or Inverlochy, some of the bigger lochs are worth targeting. Loch Shiel, Arkaig and Lochs hold some very big xerox trout and are worth fishing in March and April. Of course, you run the risk of hitting bad weather. But if conditions are right, you can expect some outstanding sport.

The best fishing spots in the Highlands are more productive in late spring, summers and Autumn months. Lastly if you are in Inverness, do not miss the chance to fish the River Ness for salmon.
