Fishing in Scotland – Introduction by Stewart Collingswood (founder and MD)
Firstly, since 2004, we have hosted thousands fishing trips in Scotland, welcoming guests from all corners of the globe. Along with fishing trips, we’ve also delivered corporate fishing events and mixed fishing and touring vacations throughout Scotland.
We are an Orvis endorsed tour operator and fishing guiding company. Our office is based near Edinburgh, in the seaside town of North Berwick.
This is our 20th year in business, and our passion for Scotland remains strong. In fact, we constantly strive to improve all aspects of what we deliver. Moreover, as well as running our business I consider myself a tourism ambassador for Scotland.
Lastly for those who have yet to experience it, Scotland stands as an exceptionally welcoming and secure destination for visitors. In fact, we Scots, are known for our sincerity, customer service and enthusiasm.
Guided fishing trips in Scotland since 2004 – how did it start?
Initially, I founded Alba 20 years ago, driven by a sense of disillusionment following my experience running a software company. Subsequently, I sought inspiration amidst the hills, armed with nothing but a notebook, in hopes of sparking new ideas. Engrossed in this endeavor, I meticulously recorded everything I held dear: fishing, photography, Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes, culinary delights, whisky, heritage, e-procurement, and tourism.
While this amalgamation may not seem immediately intuitive, it laid the groundwork for a revolutionary concept—a company dedicated to offering one of Scotland’s most coveted pastimes. As such, Alba emerged, encapsulating the very essence of those concepts scribbled down two decades ago atop that hill.
Upon its inception, Alba represented a novel idea, albeit one that took six months to materialize into a tangible business venture. We spearheaded a unique approach to fishing trips in Scotland, seamlessly blending fishing excursions with culinary experiences, photography opportunities, and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction.
Our mission was clear: to showcase the finest of Scottish fishing from key cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Aberdeen, Inverness, and the majestic Scottish Highlands. Consequently, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting countless groups from across the globe, including distinguished individuals such as the Poet Laureate, Open Golf champion Louis Oosthuizen, the South African rugby team, and the CEO of Gazprom.
2024 – our celebration of 20 years guided fishing trips in Scotland
Over the past few years, we have come through some challenging times. I have to admit it was a difficult time for our industry, but we were robust enough to survive. In fact, during this we worked hard to thrive. In 2022 and the start of 2023 there was huge growth in this sector. It seemed people have an increased appetite to escape to the outdoors and enjoy clean, safe and spiritually uplifting experiences.
We used our time during the Covid Lockdown wisely. I reimagined this as an opportunity to gear the business for future success. We scrutinised, realigned, and worked to improve everything we do.
Moreover, we took more staff on, to gear up, for the expected surge, which did happen, and continues to grow. Accounting systems were improved, sales processes fine tuned and existing fishing tackle maintained and repaired.
In addition we set up partnerships with Patagonia and Sage Fly Rods.
New fishing equipment was purchased, utilising our relationship with Sage and Redington, 20 brand new auto inflate life vests added to stock. Our website updated and our team learned new skills, including all training on Covid prevention and infection control.
We all look forward to hosting you on a trip in Scotland and sharing this great country with you. Tight lines and good health.
