The brown trout season in Scotland is from March 15th – October 6th.
On the other hand, some rivers in Scotland have delayed the opening day of the trout season to April 1st. Namely the River Tweed and River Annan.

Some rivers and lochs do not allow Sunday Fishing. Indeed most trout fisheries in Scotland are fly fishing only. Alternatively, spin casting is allowed on some waters, but at the digression of the land owner and river authority.

Interestingly all Rainbow trout in the UK are Triploid, i.e. sterilised and unable to spawn. The reason for this are as follows:
Firstly, it is possible to fish in Scotland for free. However if in doubt, always seek permission from the land owner. Equally if the trout fishing is a ticketed water, then you must purchase a permit. If you are looking for guided trout fishing trips please check out Trout Fishing in Scotland
In addition, wild trout can be easily spooked in Scottish rivers and lochs. This is because they are wild fish, and survival is their prime instinct. However, with careful approach and the correct techniques and planning, there are some specimens to be caught.
Unquestionably the best month to fish for trout in Scotland is April. Furthermore, as the rivers warm up, trout feed heavily. Fly life is exceptional and during the warm part of the day you can expect good hatches. Inevitably, bigger fish get caught as they feed freely after a lean winter. Finally if you intend to fish in the North, May will be a better month, as temperatures are slightly cooler there.

Finally, it is advisable to book a dedicated trout fishing guide when fishing in Scotland. In fact, our team includes three guides who have represented Scotland at international level for river and loch fishing.
Lastly, there is no close season for Grayling in Scotland. However, it is best to avoid fishing for them through March and April, to allow them to spawn successfully. Furthermore, when Grayling spawn varies river to river, so avoiding March and Pril will cover most river sand protect future broodtsock.
