Why all rainbow trout in the UK are Triploid (cannot reproduce)
Interestingly all Rainbow trout in the UK are Triploid, i.e. sterilised and unable to spawn. The reason for this are as follows:
- Preventing Reproduction: To begin, Triploid rainbow trout are sterile, meaning they cannot reproduce. Subsequently, this prevents them becoming the dominant species in the rivers and lochs in Scotland.
- Improved Growth Rate: Likewise, Triploid rainbow trout tend to grow quicker, compared to their diploid counterparts. This is because they allocate more energy towards growth instead of reproduction.
- Compliance with Regulations: In the UK and Scotland, there are guidelines that demand the use of triploid fish in aquaculture and stocking programs. Also rainbow trout are generally not stocked in rivers. As a result, stocking can be better contained and controlled.
