What size of bamboo rod is ideal for Scottish river trout fishing?
Ideally 7ft to 8ft two piece rods are ideal. In addition these swould be rated AFTM 4 or 5 weight. We carry in stock the Hardy Palakona 8ft, Sharpes of Aberdeen 8ft and an Allcock Poacher 8ft rod, an 8ft J Peek & son, H L Leonard rod, and Martinez and Bird “The Windrush” split cane rod. Furthermore, our rods are all 6 weights, meaning that they fish more like a 5 weight carbon rod.
Secondly, we offer vintage House of Hardy reels, like the Marquis, Marquis Multiplier and the Hardy Featherweight to use with these rods. The combination of the bamboo with a vintage reel makes for a special experience, and a nod to angling heritage in the UK.
How do I hire bamboo rods to fish in Scottish rivers?
To begin with, all of our river trout fishing packages, offer the chance to add bamboo rods for an extra cost of £75 per day. In addition this cost covers the use of the Hardy reel as well. Hiring this gear is only available to customers on guided trout fishing packages with us.
What is the difference between Bamboo and Carbon fly rods?
First of all, Bamboo rods make you feel more connected to the casting experience. In that you can really feel the rod, and get a sense of the physics of the rod loading. Everything is a lot slower, and therefore more charitable and forgiving of casting mistakes. Bamboo rods will absorb minor casting flaws as opposed to magnifying them. By the way, whilst the bamboo rod is slightly heavier, this makes it easier to detect when the rod loads. Therefore bamboo can be a good to teach beginners timing. Equally playing a trout is an amazing experience on bamboo. Hard to describe why, I don’t have the words, but believe me, it just is.
Initially fly rods were made of solid wood, or solid bamboo. Then the Golden Age of Bamboo – from 1870 to 1950 split bamboo was the chosen material for(nearly) all rods. You are experiencing angling history and paired with modern lines, these rods are a joy to fish. Carbon rods with their fast action, still have a place. However if your seeking a more immersive, and organic experience try Bamboo.
Lastly, I fished with bamboo rods as a kid, but then stopped, when glass and carbon dominated from the 1980’s. I resumed Bamboo rod fishing recently after returning from a bamboo rod building course in America with Bill Oyster. This was an amazing experience and it reminded me how good these rods are and why they should never be forgotten. It gave me the idea that many guests enjoy fishing bamboo, but perhpas dont want to risk bringing rods overseas.
