Salmon pools of Lower Kinnaird River Tay

This article highlights the salmon pools on Lower Kinnaird beat of the River Tay.

Lower Kinnaird has two miles of double-bank salmon fishing and 14 named pools. This beat is renowned for holding spring salmon and sea trout.

To begin with at the Upper/ Lower beat boundary, is the Junction pool. This is where the flow slows as it's held up by the joining of the River Tummel from the North. The Junction pool can be fished from the left or right bank, with the left bank easier for wading. In addition, Lower Kinnaird offers fishing on the lower Tummel. This is a productive  stretch leading to the Junction.

This is downstream of the road bridge on the A827 at Logierait. Furthermore, this stretch of the Tummel can be access on the left back from the 827 and you can drive all the way to the Junction.

Next is the Ferry Stream. In fact there used to be a Ferry over the Tay here and the old Ferry mans cottage is still there. This a good pool for salmon especially from the left bank.

Following the Ferry Stream is The Plantation pool. However this is better fished from the right bank.  Furthermore the wading is safe and safe on shallow gravel.

Moving downstream form the Plantation, you'll see the old hut on the left bank. Then as you progress downstream you'll come to the famous Swimming Pool. Fish will pause here and hold briefly while they rest after running through the Island Stream. Both of these pools are worth a shot and you can access them via a track which leads through the farm and on to a parking spot right by the river. It's best fished from the right bank.

One of the most famous pools on Lowert Kinnaird is the Ash Trees. You can expect fish to be taken here as early as March when the big spring tides bring in mature Atlantic Salmon.

In fact, like most beats, Lower Kinnaird operate a rotation system, so that anglers get allocated pools in the morning and afternoon sessions by head Ghillie Martin Edgar. Furthermore, if you have a preference to fish certain pools on the beat, you would let your guide or Martin know. Martin would do his best to accommodate, and this always depends on the numbers of rods on the beat.

Lower Kinnaird Beat - Bottom Section

The bottom of the beat, this is best accessed from the gate at Milton of Kincraiggie, which allows access via a track to the parking spot on the Guay Pool.

If you move upstream of the Guay, you can fish both Kindallachan and The New Run. However in my opinion, I like to focus on the head of the Guay pool which has an excellent riffle and drop off at the head of the pool. This is a great spot in low water conditions when fish seek oxygen and cover. The rest of teh Guay is an even run on medium gravel and holds fish throughout the pool.

Finally this is where the beat ends, and joins the top of the Dalguise beat. Dalguise has access to the lower part of the Guay pool.

You can also see the Dalguise fishing hut from here.
