Firstly, the Glen Clova Hotel is a remote Scottish gem, offering salmon, sea trout fishing on the River South Esk.
Secondly, it is located at the end of a single track road in Glen Clova. In fact you get a sense of remoteness and solitude. Moreover, the Glen Clova Hotel was originally a Drovers Inn, dating back to the 1850’s the current hotel has been recently upgraded without losing any of its charm and heritage.
The Climbers Bar is a cozy sanctuary to enjoy home-cooked suppers and local ales. I enjoyed a delicious game pie and a cold Guinness by the wood burning stove. Likewise, you can enjoy chatting with like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. Hanging on the walls of this outdoor enthusiasts meeting place, are artifacts of a bygone era, like sheep clippers and antique farm tools.
Lastly, the bedrooms are delightful, comfortable beds, hot showers, and new carpets, with lots of thoughtful wee touches in the decor. The showers are hot and if you stay in some of the lodges you can enjoy a sauna or a soak in the hot tub.
Fishing in the Angus Area
The Glen Clova Hotel is surrounded by some of the best river and loch fishing in Scotland, and it’s all close proximity to the hotel. There are 6 miles of the South Esk offering fly fishing for salmon, trout and sea trout. Access to various parts of the river is through farmers fields using our 4X4 vehicles. In addition, there are two trout lochs. Firstly, Loch Brandy offers wild brown trout fishing on a typical hill loch. Secondly Loch Heath, which is closer to the hotel to the hotel. In fact Loch Heath is a fly fishing venue that would also suit a corporate fishing event.
It has to be said the charm of Glen Clova, is the feeling that you are in a true wilderness, and this is. Glen Clova is situated in The Cairngorms National Park, Britains last wilderness. The changing light, landscapes and rugged beauty of the Glen take your breath away. Wi-fi is available in the lobby, but not the bedrooms. Consequently, this is a place to disconnect.
Finally, Clay pigeon shooting and escorted walks can be arranged through the hotel. In summary, if you are keen on the outdoors, photography, wildlife, salmon and trout fishing, shooting, and really escaping to a lesser-known corner of Scotland, then Glen Clova is a true Hidden Gem.
